Safety Activity Checkpoints
Before participating in any Girl Scout activity beyond your troop meetings, a leader or adult troop volunteer should review Safety Activity Checkpoints at the Council web site. Review the Home Page for Safety Activity Checkpoints and then click on the activity your troop would like to do, such as Ice Skating. The page will open and will provide all the information you need to follow in order to keep your girls safe, such as finding a safe site, arranging ahead of time to have an instructor teach the girls the basics of safe skating, what equipment to bring, etc. Follow these requirements and you will keep your girls safe and your activity will be covered by Girl Scout insurance.
Become familiar with the activities which are not approved by Girl Scouts because they involve unpredictable safety variables and will not be covered by insurance. These include but are not limited to:
o Hot air ballooning
o Bungee jumping
o Flying in small private planes, helicopters, or blimps
o Hang gliding
o Stunt skiing
o Motor biking
o Parachuting
o Riding all-terrain vehicles
o Riding motorized personal watercraft like jet-skis
o Trampolining OF ANY KIND
o Hunting
o Simulated skydiving and zero-gravity rooms
o Parasailing
You should have a first aid kit available at your troop meetings, along with you on troop field trips, and in each field trip driver’s car. Safety Activity Checkpoints will tell you when a First Aid/CPR adult needs to accompany your troop and what level of training is required.
Girl/Adult Ratios Chart
Be sure to follow the Girl/Adult Ratios as presented in each activity link in Safety Activity Checkpoints and on the chart on page 44 of Volunteer Essentials.
You must have a minimum of two non-related adults at every Girl Scout activity and at least one of them must be a trained leader.
